The parents of a baby girl left with life-changing injuries after being mistakenly given nitrous oxide gas at a Sydney hospital have spoken out for the first time.

Danial and Benish Khan, who previously chose to keep their identities secret, have described the impact of the mistake on daughter Amelia as ‘devastating’.

Amelia, who was given the ‘laughing gas’ shortly after her birth at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital, suffered irreversible brain damage. Enduring frequent seizures and being fed through a tube, Amelia now requires round-the-clock care.

In a statement, the Khans said: “It’s devastating as a parent to be told that your precious daughter has suffered permanent brain damage. We just want everyone to know what happened to Amelia won’t ever go away.”

“She will always have to live with the consequences of what was done to her at the hospital. But we will always be by her side and we’ll do everything we can to give her the best possible future,” they added.

Amelia’s story came to light following the death of baby John Ghanem, who passed away after falling victim to the very same mix-up at the very same hospital.

Compensation for the Khans is reportedly being ‘fast-tracked’, although the full final settlement for the family will need to be decided upon in court.

Our hearts go out to them.
