Members of the public have given generously to a fund set up for a widower, who has been left to raise his six children alone following the death of his wife.

Katie Evans, 37, died last weekend when her car was struck by a vehicle being driven by a drunk-driver.

The mum-of-six was on her way home from visiting her newborn twin daughters, Hannah and Sarah, in hospital. The twins were born premature, and Katie ‘couldn’t go a day without visiting them’.

Katie was just one mile from her family home when the accident occurred, on October 6.

Katie leaves behind her husband Jacob, along with their six children: Spencer, 12; Travis, 11; Nathaniel, nine; Gideon, two; and twins Hannah and Sarah, who are just under eight weeks old.

Over on a YouCaring page (link here) set up by loved one Natalie Mortensen, Katie was described as a ‘devoted mother, sister and wife’ who will be ‘immensely missed’.

Natalie explained why she was seeking to raise $100,000 – a target which has since risen to $500,000 – for the family.

“Jacob is left to care for six kids by himself. There will be many childcare costs as well as unforeseen expenses,” Natalie wrote.

“We know many would like to help but don’t know how to, or are too far away to help in person.

“If you would like to donate towards childcare and other expenses, you could make Jacob’s life a little easier.”

So far, people have really rallied for the sake of the family, donating an overwhelming $210, 692.

In an update, Natalie shared a positive update on the twins’ progress.

“We want to share with you some good news: the twins are doing surprisingly well,” she wrote.

“Both Sarah and Hannah have doubled their birth weight, and doctors are planning for them to come home in four to six weeks.”

She added that Jacob and the extended family are ‘incredibly grateful for the tremendous outpouring of support and love’.

We’re thinking of the family at this devastating time.
