Many of us will be only too familiar with that gut-wrenching feeling when you have to leave your little one behind for the day, and face into nine hours of work – but only a few will know the devastation of never seeing their child alive again.

This was the case for Texas couple Zac and Heather Lytle, whose seven-month-old son Roger died after being swaddled and placed down for a nap at day care, in 2014. He was later found face down and unresponsive.

The couple sued the day care centre, All In The Family Child Care Services, accusing them of negligence. While the Lytle family were looking for a sum of $7 million, they were this week awarded $142 million; this sum is thought to be one of the largest of its kind in the US.

While it marks a moral victory for the Lytle family, legal sources reckon that they won’t see anywhere near the entire sum – mainly because the day care centre has already closed down and had no insurance.

Since Roger’s tragic and untimely passing in 2014, the Lytles have launched a fundraising page in their son’s name, to keep his memory alive and make a difference to the lives of the less fortunate.

We’re thinking of the Lytles at this emotional time.
