There have been some truly harrowing stories in the headlines in recent weeks, but this one will make your heart stop.

Doctors in the Syrian city of Aleppo are celebrating after performing ‘miraculous’ and life-saving surgery on an unborn child injured in a missile strike.

According to reports, the doctors were forced to perform a Caesarean-section on a pregnant woman whose unborn baby was struck with shrapnel during a warplane missile attack.

Footage of the incredible procedure shows the doctors removing the child from the woman’s womb. The precious baby is seen bearing shrapnel in her tiny head as well as her face and hair.

While the baby is initially motionless, the doctors manage to revive her with an oxygen mask and vigorous rubbing. As she lets out a cry, the doctors then remove the debris from her body.

In order to perform the life-saving procedure, medics had to borrow equipment and call in a gynaecologist from another hospital.

The footage goes on to show the relieved doctors celebrating the baby’s survival. While the baby girl has not yet been named, the popular suggestion is ‘Amal’, which means ‘hope’ in Arabic.

What a harrowing story. Our hearts go out to this child, her mother and her family, and we hope they are now safe.
