Finding out that you are expecting one baby is cause enough for celebration, but to discover that another is on the way is quite the revelation.

This was the case for US couple Kate Elazegui and wife Emily Kehe, who both gave birth to sons in December, just days apart from one another.

The couple received their doubly-joyful news after both undergoing IVF and insemination treatment, at the encouragement of their doctor.

Kate and Emily shared their remarkable story with New York magazine this week, revealing that Kate turned to IVF ‘as a last resort’ after six months of inseminations. When their doctor suggested that Emily undergo insemination herself, they decided to strengthen their efforts to conceive, but they had no idea what was in store.

Just two weeks later, they found out that Emily was expecting, and a further three weeks brought some very unexpected news: Kate was pregnant too!

“It was so overwhelming. I mean obviously I was so happy for her, but I was like, ‘What are we going to do?’” recalled Emily, revealing that at the time they were living in a one-bedroom apartment.

They proceeded to move to a house in the suburbs, where they adapted to the challenge of being pregnant all at once together.

“There were moments where it would have been nice if one of us wasn't pregnant. But the camaraderie, just having someone understand exactly what you're going through was incredible,” said Emily.

She went on to give birth to son Reid on December 10, with Kate’s waters breaking just a day after the couple returned home with their newborn. They went on to welcome their second son, Eddie, shortly after.

While the mums have admitted that their maternal instinct tells them to take care of the baby they each gave birth to, they are adapting to their roles and delighting in their new status as a family-of-four. They have insisted, however, that they will not be going through the pregnancy experience again!
