A 5km walk will take you less than an hour but it will do so much to help families across the Republic of Ireland with seriously ill children.

Ronald McDonald House Charity in Ireland launched a new national fundraising initiative, #Walk4Families, which aims to raise vital funds for a new Ronald McDonald House that will accommodate 53 families alongside the New National Children's Hospital at a cost of €16 million.

Calling for support from all corners of Ireland for this initiative, CEO (Volunteer) of Ronald McDonald House Charity in Ireland, Marian Carroll, said: “We are calling on people to support our #Walk4Families event taking place all over Ireland on 10th and 11th September."

"We are asking for people to participate that weekend, bring their children, enjoy the family-friendly atmosphere and, most of all, support families who have a seriously ill child in hospital.”

Since 2004, the Ronald McDonald House has provided accommodation, care and support for almost 3,000 families whose seriously ill children have been hospitalized or are undergoing treatment at Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin.

Frances Higgins from Salthill, Galway stayed in the Ronald McDonald House when both of her children were sick in hospital. Ailbhe aged 7 has a congenital heart defect and to date has had three major open heart surgeries and numerous other interventions.  Evan, aged 5, was born at 26 weeks and spent the first 15 and half weeks of his life in hospital.

“Being able to stay in the Ronald McDonald House was a godsend for us when one of the kids were in hospital. It gave us a base to be with the child who was in hospital but also to have the other child with us so that we could function as a family while based in the  hospital in Dublin.  It became our home away from home for the time we were there and we are very grateful for it – we really needed the support and comfort the Ronald McDonald House provided”.
