Removing dead skin cells from pores is the most effective way to treat acne. Exfoliating the face does exactly that but exfoliating with a scrub is too harsh for some women. So what’s the alternate? Exfoliating masks are an easy and gentle way to remove the dead skin cells and debris that causes acne.

Using a facial mask that contains alpha hydroxy acid is very effective way to clear the pores of dirt, dead skin and debris. Alpha hydroxy acid also helps to reduce the appearance of lines and acne scars. Exfoliating masks can be used safely once per week. Overuse of an alpha hydroxy acid mask may leave the skin dry and flaky. Make sure to ask your dermatologist which product is best for you and how often you should use it.

Many of today’s exfoliating masks contain fruit acids. Fruits contain natural alpha hydroxy acids such as citric acid and malic acid. When these acids are added to facial masks, they work to eliminate dead skin cells and promote new cell growth. Our favorite fruit mask is Murad Pomegranate Exfoliating Mask, which can be found in most local drugstores or beauty supply stores. The alpha hydroxy acids in this mask work great to clear up and manage cases of mild acne, while the pomegranate provides the skin with antioxidants to improve it’s overall health.

A negative side affect of using facial masks that contain alpha hydroxy acids is that your skin can become hyper-sensitive to the sun. This means you can burn easily. While sun sensitivity happens to any skin that is exfoliated, the alpha hydroxy acid intensifies the sensitivity level. Therefore, it is crucial that you get into the habit of applying sun block daily. Make sure that the sun block you use is formulated for your skin type.
