Rita Treacy

Speech & Language Therapist - specialising in reading & spelling difficulties (like dyslexia)
Rita Treacy graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 1986 with a BSc. (Hons) Degree in Remedial Linguistics and, after one-year work experience in a busy community care clinic in Dublin, she relocated to Australia.

In those days, Australia was at the forefront of new and innovative therapy practises, focusing on Speech & Language Therapy involvement with the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of Specific Learning Difficulties (SLD). During this time Rita specialised in the area of SLDs and associated language difficulties in children and adolescents.

Upon returning to Ireland in 1991, Rita then worked for 12 years within the St John of God Lucena Clinic, Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). Rita became Principal Therapist and Head of Department, working in a multi-disciplinary team environment involving Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Psychiatric Nurses, Teachers and Childcare Workers. This involved working in the on-site St Peter’s School, in out-patient clinics and also parttime in her own Private Practice.

In 2002, Rita established her full-time Private Practice, to further her specialism in the area of SLDs (including dyslexia) and to help children and young people to overcome their reading and spelling difficulties. To make her service more widely available, Rita redeveloped the successful paper-based programme used in her Private Practice, into an online version called “WordsWorthLearning”. The online programme is not only used within her Private Practice; it is also being used independently - at home by parents, in schools by teachers and, often, in collaboration working together.

Rita is currently involved in projects exploring innovative educational practise, pedagogy and product development, e.g.: introducing the 'Flipped Classroom' approach and enhancing WordsWorthLearning with gamification and augmented reality content. Her first book, on dyslexia, is due to be published in early 2017.
