I know the Knorr brand for years, since I was a kid, but have never heard of these Zero Salt stock cubes. That is until I signed up for this trial.  I use stock cubes in all of my dinners as they give instant balanced flavour without the need to keep adding tonnes of herbs. I’ve used these products over the course of the last few weeks but probably need to highlight what I used them for so it’s easier to understand how good they were.

First up was the chicken Zero Salt stock cubes – I used them for my go-to risotto recipe (one from Darina Allen in Ballymaloe).  I usually labour over taking Sunday’s chicken carcass and putting it into a pot on Sunday night with other bits to create homemade stock as it has (you’ve guessed it) zero salt but I opted to skip this routine as I had my stock cubes to try.  When I say that the risotto went down well, that’s an understatement.  A pet peeve of my husband is that I often reduce salt as the kids are eating the same dinner as we are but on this occasion, he was happy!  The Zero Salt cubes delivered on flavour in the dish AND I was able to skip adding any salt at all.  Success!  Next up was my lamb tagine (I used the beef Zero Salt stock cubes for this) – this is a dish which is steeped in spices but without salt it can be bland. I chose to only season at the end of cooking (just before I served) as I wanted to taste the dish without any salt and to be honest, it didn’t need anything as the flavour from the stock cubes had enriched the dish which was already full of flavour from the other ingredients. Finally the veggie Zero Salt cubes. We try to eat meat free for one or two days a week so I have a few dishes that I rely on that I know everyone will eat.  I make a veggie lasagne with black beans and chickpeas which NEEDS seasoning. Beans are a great source of protein but they can be bland. I made the dish as I always would – I do make food from scratch and I did wonder if I’d get away with being salt free. For this dish, I did need to add a little salt for my taste, but what I liked about using these stock cubes, was that I was able to control the quantity that I included, a control I didn't have before.

I’m often time starved and have used other stock cubes but I’ve found the cheaper brands feel really salty and don’t taste as good so I think there is definitely a compromise on taste and quality vs. price. I’d highly recommend anyone with a family to use these Zero Salt stock cubes instead of the regular ones. You're getting great flavour in your dish and a reduction in salt. I’ve already purchased them again.

I was absolutely thrilled to be chosen to take part in this trial – we love cooking in our house, and it’s a family affair too! I think it’s so important that children learn how to cook from an early age – my mum taught us and it’s something you always have. It’s also brilliant family time – although I’ll be honest, it can be challenging on occasion.
This week we agreed to make four recipes using the zero salt stock cubes – Spaghetti Bolognese, vegetable soup and chicken curry. They are simple recipes that I know everyone will love. And they are very easy and inexpensive to make for a family of five.
We normally get recipes prepared for the week at the weekend so we set to work. I’m very conscious of creating meals from scratch when I can, knowing what goes on to each plate is really important to me. Obviously we have cheat days, but more often than not, it’s fully homemade.
I’m very familiar with Knorr and always use their stock cubes– but I hadn’t heard of the zero salt ones before this trial. I was a little hesitant with zero salt, as it’s really the only flavouring we use when cooking – but the taste was just the same. This is a fantastic result, as I’m very conscious of added salt in our diet. I also really like that we can include these cubes in the recipes for all ages, there’s no change of creating different dishes in our house, we all eat from the one pot as it were.
I can honestly say I didn’t notice any difference in taste from the normal stock cubes. I will definitely buy again and I would highly recommend.

I’m a mum of 4 and I make dinners 6 days a week (one night is pizza night) so I need to create food that the teens and younger ones will eat AND that himself will eat too. A tall order. I use my slow cooker at least 3 times a week as I find it handy and quick for making nourishing dinners. I always use stock cubes and have bought them in Aldi or Lidl before as they were cheaper. I do know Knorr and fond memories of soups and meal maker dinners when I was younger! I like to be able to pick what I put in my dishes and deliberately don’t use jars or packets for most dinners as I feel there a hidden ingredients in them that I can’t exclude. I try to cook in a price conscious manner but do not take short cuts (such as jars) as I think dinner is the most important meal of the day and the only one that I really control for the family (i.e. what they eat). My favourite slow cooker recipes are Spanish Chicken (so easy), Veggie Chilli and Beef Curry and I used the Knorr cubes for each of these dinners as a test. I prepared the food in the slow cooker before I left for work and had it set that it would be ready for us at dinner time that evening. I tasted each dish before serving and the flavour of each one was impressive. There was a depth of flavour that I don’t usually get when I use cheaper stock cubes (I did keep my ingredients the exact same for the trial!). I didn’t add any salt to any of the dinners and waited to see if anyone would notice. They didn’t! Not one of them said a word and they just ate with gusto. I think over the years we have probably become used to ‘just adding salt’ but in reality, if the rest of the dish is full of flavour, you don’t really need it.
This was new to me – I thought I was saving money by buying a less expensive stock cube but it was a false saving as I could mind my family’s health by using the zero salt cubes AND the dinner was still eaten. Health isn’t something that you can put a price on which is why I’ll compromise on other areas of the household but not on good stock. I have already recommended them to my sisters and will buy them again.  If you are keen to reduce salt intake, and still have great taste, then these are a great alternative for your family.

My daughter and I are avid cooks and we love trying out new ingredients so we were both very excited to be taking part in this trial with Knorr Zero Salt stock cubes.
As we try to make a lot of our own meals, stock is a really important item in our weekly shop (if we had more time we’d probably try our hand at making our own, but we’re not there yet).
We know Knorr stock cubes well although I’m not sure we’ve seen these ones before, maybe that’s because we hadn’t been looking though.
We made four recipes using the new zero salt stock cubes – these are recipes we make all the time, so that we’d know what they normally taste like. The meals we made were vegetable curry, Chilli con carne, cottage pie and veggie pasta. I thought they were all delicious; there really was no noticeable difference in taste at all, and the rest of the family didn’t notice any difference.
I was so glad that they tasted just as good, and both myself and my daughter agree that we should opt for the lower salt option now all the time. I’m not generally one to change a recipe if it works, but in all these dishes, it just makes sense to go less salt, it’s an easy switch, and a healthier choice.
Delighted to recommend these to other mums and families. 10/10

Thank you for letting us take part in this trial – I’m a bit of a creature of habit, so I don’t often try out new things unless somebody tells me about them, or I get to test it like this.
I had seen the zero salt stock cubes in store, but I didn’t buy them as I just wasn’t sure. I have two children, a four year old and a six year old, so I’m making a lot of homemade dinners right now, and making one meal that suits everyone is really important for me, which means zero salt stock cubes fits right in. I am conscious of the amount of salt we have every day, so if there’s an option to reduce it at the cooking stage, without impacting the taste, I’m all for it.
My recipes are quite simple and traditional, but I still want them to taste good. As soon as I got the stock cubes, I decided I would make a beef stew and lasagne, and as I was trying out something new, I also decided to go with a new recipe, Roasted Cauliflower Korma (from the Knorr website).
All three meals were really tasty, and I didn’t notice any difference in taste or flavour. The kids finished every bit and gave the thumbs up. The hubby was happy too.
I will buy these again, and I would recommend.
Thanks so much.
