Fever and teething: how to care for your baby
Advertorial

Teething can be an issue for infants when their first teeth start emerging through the gums.

Generally, it happens as a result of a baby’s tender and swollen gums. This makes them irritable and sore, and with this can come a slight rise in temperature. So, with that in mind, we've compiled helpful advice on how to care for your little one, and what to look out for:

Check for symptoms of fever
It’s not always easy to know if your child has a temperature, but symptoms to look out for are fussing, red cheeks and a warm forehead. However, the most effective way to know for sure is to check your little one’s temperature using a digital thermometer. Simply pop it under your child’s armpit and wait for 30 seconds or so.

Know what constitutes a fever
It’s important to know what constitutes a fever, so bear in mind that anything on or above 37.5°C is classed as a fever and you should seek medical advice.

Make sure the fever is related to teething
Teething should only bring on a mild rise in temperature – so if your child has a fever, it’s possible it could be due to an infection or an illness. For example, ear infections can often be mistaken for teething. Keep a close eye out for other symptoms, and remember, if your child has a fever over 37.5°C, it’s always advised to make an appointment to see your doctor.

Caring for a teething-related fever
The key here is to cool your little one down by soothing their discomfort. This can be achieved in several gentle ways:
  • Rub their gums gently with a clean finger of gauze pad using circular motions.
  • Keep them hydrated by offering them plenty of milk and water.
  • Chewing can help, so give them a chilled (not frozen) teething ring to chew on.
  • If your baby is three months or older you can give them an infant liquid pain reliever such as paracetamol. Make sure you read the instructions carefully, and if you’re unsure if it’s suitable for your child contact your GP.
  • Use a mesh feeder to allow them to nibble on chilled and frozen fruit without the risk of choking.
  • Dress them in cool, lightweight layers and cover them in light bedding.
