Looking for a day out that’s educational, entertaining, and absolutely free? This summer, one of Ireland’s hidden gems is opening its doors to the public – and it's perfect for curious kids, history buffs, and anyone fascinated by how the lights come on when we flick a switch.
From 1st July to 5th September 2025, ESB Ardnacrusha Power Station in County Limerick is once again welcoming families and groups for guided tours of Ireland’s original hydro-electric powerhouse. And the best part? It’s completely free.
Nestled on the banks of the River Shannon, Ardnacrusha is more than just a power station. It’s a symbol of Irish independence and innovation. Built in the 1920s, it was once one of the most ambitious engineering projects in Europe – and today, it still plays a role in powering homes across Ireland.
Each 90-minute tour gives visitors a behind-the-scenes look at this incredible facility, with passionate guides who bring the story of electricity in Ireland to life. From its ambitious beginnings to its vital role in ESB’s journey to net zero by 2040, there’s something for every age to enjoy.
