When you’re giving birth, particularly where there is an added complication, you rely on the absolute professionalism of the medical staff taking care of you.

Sadly, for grieving parents Emma and James Strachan, this was apparently not the case when they lost their baby daughter, Bonnie.

The Strachans shared their side of the story of Bonnie’s birth this week, during a court hearing in Ipswich, England.

Bonnie died moments after her breech birth, with an official report citing deprivation of oxygen as the cause of death.

Appearing before the court today, the Strachans raised concerns over both the advice they received during pregnancy and Emma’s treatment during her labour.

Describing Bonnie’s delivery as “panicked” and a “mad fumble”, they also recalled a midwife joking about ‘selling tickets’ for what was an unusual vaginal breech birth procedure.

The Strachans recalled how Bonnie was “left hanging” for several minutes before the medical team decided to release her arms and head, and when they eventually transferred her to a resuscitation table, the oxygen ran out.

A distraught Mrs Strachan told the hearing: “In many ways it seemed too relaxed. Looking back, at times I felt alone while everyone around me was relaxed and jovial.”

She added that she and her husband were also not adequately informed of the risks that accompany a vaginal breech delivery.

Commenting on how the experience has impacted upon her and her family, Mrs Strachan added: “We feel like our world has been turned upside-down. Our baby girl was taken from us…The thought of a future pregnancy, labour and birth currently petrifies us.”

The hearing is set to resume later today.
