Many parents get their youngster a hamster as their first pet thinking they are easy to take care of.

However, while they are definitely a lot easier to manage than a larger animal, hamsters require a little more than a clean cage and a wheel, and it is important you realise that getting one as a pet needs a little consideration.

How to house them

There are a number of different styles of cages to use: wire top with plastic base or plastic mould house with a little cage door. Just make sure you get one big enough for the size of your pet.

Foods to feed them

Make sure you feed your hamster a special dry mix from the pet store and give them a small amount each day. The food should contain a mix of seeds, oats, maize and beans.

Give them toys

Your hamster will need a little stimulation in their cage so make sure they have plenty of toys to play with. Tunnels, climbing blocks, wheels, ladders, seasaws and even toilet roll tubes provide hours of stimulation for your pet.
