The thoughts of a fire breaking out at your family home is nothing but terrifying. We all try to be extremely wary when it comes to being fire safe, but sometimes the inevitable happens.

The smallest thing like a candle or a phone charger can cause mass destruction at your family home.

Sometimes we can’t stop this from happening, but what we can do is be prepared for the worse case scenario.

Last night, a family in Tallaght faced our worst nightmare when a fire broke out at their home. Four fire engines and crews battled the blaze during the night.

The Dublin Fire Brigade shared photos of the damage and warned families of the importance of having a family fire plan for your home.

They shared details of last night’s fire: “There was extensive fire damage to the house and the houses either side were smoked logged.”

Luckily, the family managed to escape the fire quickly. “The occupants of the house were out upon our arrival.”

Having a family fire plan in place is one of the most important things you should do.

Experts stress the importance of including a safe meeting zone. This is a location outside of your house where you can all meet after escaping the blaze.

It is best to choose a location that is far enough away from your home but still well-known to your children.

Crouching down on the floor and crawling is the best way to move throughout the house during a fire. Teaching your children about this manoeuvre is essential. They will feel reassured knowing what to do in the event of a fire.

You never know where a fire will break out until it happens so remember to plan escape routes from every room of your home. It is recommended to find two exits in every room, just in case one is blocked or not accessible.

Reminding the family of your fire escape plan at least once a year is essential.
