Homegrown at Arboretum: A feel-good family day out that supports Irish makers

If you’re looking for a family-friendly destination that ticks all the boxes, great food, fresh air, a browse-worthy shop and something genuinely meaningful behind it, then 'Homegrown at Arboretum' is well worth a visit.

I was recently invited to experience the new initiative at Arboretum Garden Centre (I went to the Kilquade, Co. Wicklow branch), and brought my daughter along for what turned into a really lovely day out. Living nearby, it’s already a regular spot for us, but this visit gave me a whole new appreciation for what’s on offer.

A local favourite with something for everyone

We’ve always loved Arboretum Kilquade. It’s one of those places you can pop into for a quick browse and somehow end up staying for hours. Between the garden centre, lifestyle store, playground and beautifully kept gardens, it’s such an easy win for families. There’s plenty of parking, which is always a big plus, and it’s a great meeting point for catching up with friends or family.

On this visit, we did exactly that, pottered around at our own pace and soaked it all in. My nearly 11-year-old was just as happy wandering as I was, which says a lot. The space is thoughtfully laid out, very family-friendly, and the staff couldn’t have been nicer, so welcoming and helpful throughout.

Lunch (and the chips we keep coming back for!)

Of course, no visit is complete without a stop at the café. We had a lovely lunch, and I have to say the chips are still a firm favourite in our house. It’s one of the reasons we keep coming back.

What’s especially nice, and something that ties in beautifully with the new initiative, is that the menu focuses on high-quality, locally sourced ingredients, working with Irish suppliers like Nick’s Fish, Keelings and Butlers Chocolates.

What is ‘Homegrown at Arboretum’?

Launched this spring, 'Homegrown at Arboretum' is all about celebrating Irish producers, growers and makers. Across their Kilquade and Carlow stores, you’ll now find a curated selection of homegrown brands spanning everything from skincare and food to plants, gifts and crafts.

It’s not just a small section tucked away either. You can really see how this initiative has been thoughtfully integrated across the entire store, from the retail space to the café and garden centre. It genuinely feels like a celebration of Irish creativity and sustainability.

Discovering Irish brands in-store

One of my favourite parts of the visit was browsing the wide range of Irish products on offer. There’s something special about knowing the story behind what you’re buying, and here you really feel that connection.

Some standout names include:

  • Atlantik Body Care, a natural skincare brand from Kerry

  • Mamó, with its beautiful botanical soaps, candles and even natural skincare for dogs

  • Bella Bloom Plants, offering Bord Bia quality assured plants perfect for home or garden

  • Bánór, a luxurious skincare range inspired by sheep milk and wool

  • Harry’s Nutbutter, a well-loved Irish pantry staple

  • Rita Oates, whose artwork captures the essence of the Irish landscape

It’s the kind of place where you can pick up a thoughtful gift. Their vouchers are also a great option. You can treat yourself to something unique and support local businesses all at once.

A destination with heart

What really stands out about 'Homegrown at Arboretum' is the intention behind it. As Fergal Doyle, Chief Commercial Officer at Arboretum, explains, the initiative aims to give Irish brands a platform to grow while encouraging customers to shop more sustainably and with purpose.

And as a customer, you can feel that. It’s not just about shopping. It’s about discovering, connecting and supporting.

The perfect family day out

We ended up spending a couple of hours there without even noticing the time pass. Between the relaxed browsing (so many nice things to smell!), the delicious food and the welcoming atmosphere, it’s easy to see why Arboretum Kilquade has become such a go-to for so many families, ours included.

If you’re nearby, or even if you’re not, it’s well worth making a trip. Whether you’re picking up plants, meeting friends for lunch, or simply looking for something different to do with the kids, 'Homegrown at Arboretum' adds an extra layer of feel-good to the experience.

And once you’ve been, don’t be surprised if it becomes a regular stop.
