A hospital has opened up a room for a very special cause.

The set aside area is for parents that wish to spend time with their stillborn babies before they say goodbye.

It is called The Snowdrop Room and it is the first one to open at Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

Painted with peaceful colours in mind, the room is specifically designed to be a “comfortable, calm, and serene” space.

Barbara Gergett, one of the hospital’s midwives, told BBC News that their main objective was to make families feel at home.

The Snowdrop group even worked alongside an artist to commission artwork that would emit this safe and restful vibe.

The room has been decorated with flowers, an essential oils diffuser, a bed with lovely linens, and a small cot for the baby as well.

“Now it is recognised that families in their journey of grief need to spend time with their baby to create memories and to know who they are grieving for," Barbara told BBC.

"The world just falls down around them and they don't know what to do so it's important that they come to a place where they feel safe and secure."

By having this room available, parents can spend time with their child in private and not feel rushed to say goodbye.

It is a well thought out and great addition to the hospital’s maternity ward, and we hope other hospitals will follow suit.

Creating a warm and safe environment could make all the difference in these families’ lives and help them on their way to healing and closure.
