Those of you who own pets will know just what an important and integral part of your life they can become. They are part of the family and involved in almost everything you do.

But what happens when a new baby comes along? What are the best ways to handle the situation and what are the rules about allowing your dog and baby to interact?

When preparing for a new baby yourself as a mother or father, it is important to also prepare your pet, especially dogs. As your dog will be naturally receiving less attention once the baby arrives, try to slightly reduce the time you spend with them so it doesn’t come as a shock and there is no resentment towards the new baby. Dogs much more than cats have the potential to get jealous which is best avoided.

You could also try to prepare your dog for a new baby by carrying a doll around and noting how your dog reacts. If she reacts with gentle behaviour, reward her.

It is important to be honest about the dog that you own before a new baby comes along. If your dog is naturally aggressive and territorial it may simply be a massive risk. Know your dog and know the ways in which they react to children and other dogs as an indicator. Don’t risk having a potentially dangerous dog under the same roof as your baby.

When introducing your dog to a new baby it is important to do it slowly and gently. With one parent holding the baby, allow your dog, who will be curious, to approach the baby. Your dog should react with a wagging tail and curious manner. If your dog chooses to ignore the baby, it may be a bad sign.

No matter how trusted your family dog is, it is not worth taking the risk of leaving him alone with your baby. Babies who are increasingly mobile can accidentally hurt a dog by pulling at them or even biting them and there is no certain way of knowing how your dog will react. Quite simply, it is never worth the risk. If anything happens, no matter how minor, it is the dog that will pay the price.

Ensure your dog has a place to go that is baby-free during the day, both outside and inside. They may need a break just as much as you do!

Dogs can be amazing company for babies and children, as long as they are gentle and under supervision. They can teach children about kindness, commitment and responsibility.

If possible, try to get a puppy when your baby is almost a toddler. Though the dog will grow faster, they will have grown up together and will become fast, livelong friends.
