If you are a bit of a vintage-fend and love nothing more than old-fashioned, sentimental items around your home, why not bite the bottle and go the whole way.

The forties is a really stylish and beautiful era with the likes of Audrey Hepburn adorning our the movie screens at the time, so why not step back in time for some fun.

1. Mix old with new

During the forties a lot of the decor was based on mixing old-fashioned items of sentimental value with new more modern pieces.

2. Use colour

Make sure you use plenty of colour throughout and lots of flowers. Reds, greens and yellows were used on the walls with furniture dressed in floral patterns, although flowers did make it onto the walls in some homes!

3. Choose carpet

As carpet became a lot cheaper hardwood floors started to disappear in favour of something a little softer underfoot.

4. Lots of lovely pattern

Whether you choose a floral, poke-a-dot or a stripy pattern no 40s style home could possibly be complete without it. If you don’t fancy going the whole hog or simply can’t afford it, a flower throw over your couch or poke-a-dot curtains could be the way to go.
