Don't let the challenges of a small space cramp your decorating style. A punch of colour can work wonders in adding energy, character and even space to a small room.

1. Corner confidential
If you’re short on square inches, be thoughtful with your design choices. Vibrant red and neutral tones of green feel inventive in a neutral living room. Choose pieces that are interesting on their own like a stand alone shelving unit, patterned chair, and modern coffee table.

2. Brighten up
If you're renting or sharing a space, you may be limited in how much decorating you can do. It doesn't always have to be about painting the walls, covering the floors, or buying a bold piece of furniture. Accessories - lamp shades, bookshelves, cushions -  in bright and cheery shades can invigorate a space. You can make frequent budget-friendly decorative swaps.

3. Waves of colours
Make colourful strides that will transform a traditional kitchen. A bold shade of red brightens the walls and a blue tiled backsplash feels fresh and inviting.

4. 50 shades
Choose a colour, and explore its many sides. Watch how well the different shades of blue for example, (turquoise, cobalt, navy) play together and add instant life to a living room.

5. Grey matters
Panelling can add an unexpected texture to a room. Paint one wall a cool shade of grey, which will enhance the detailing on the walls. Built-in shelving units makes sense in a living area for displaying photos and more.

6. Green space
When a room has some architectural detail, a little colour will go a long way. A surprising shot of mint green gives a space a more sophisticated twist, and an overlook fresh feel.

7. Splash of colour
If the kitchen is part of the area that you're decorating, then make decisions that are bold enough to distinguish it from the rest of the room.  Have a look at the room, and decide what colours would work well together. For example, if your kitchen is white, paint one wall in the kitchen with a bright coat of blue. White shelves and cabinets accentuate, but don't compete with the vibrant colour.

8. Palette perfect
A diverse palette can actually play an almost monochromatic role in a room. Keep your main pieces (sofa, coffee table) in creamy neutral tones. A modern shade of grey on the walls will make everything else come alive.

9. Deck the halls
Make your hallway an interesting space by adding patterned tiles to the floor, shade of blue on the wall, and pulling in a piece of furniture with a hint of character.

10. Add the unexpected
Add unexpected colour to your room with a vibrant picture, cushion, or lamp shade. Or try something unexpected with your colours like coral on the floor and grey on the walls of your bathroom.
