The dangers associated with overexposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun have lead to a recent increase in the popularity of spray tanning. Salons offer professional applications that last for several weeks when maintained properly. Use-at-home products are available that will also provide a good result when applied properly and maintained. In either case, there are several things you can do to ensure your spray tan is the best it can be and to make it last as long as possible.

Preparing for your spray tan:
  • Prior to getting a spray tan, you should exfoliate with a loofah and an exfoliating wash or natural scrub, like sugar, salt, or oatmeal. Exfoliating removes the loose dead skin cells, allowing the spray tan product to be applied more evenly and last longer.
  • Do not apply lotion to your skin before you get a spray tan. The oils in the lotion will block the chemical reaction that causes the skin cells to darken. If you are using a professional salon for your spray tan, the technician will advise you on using lotions.
  • Avoid sweating, showering, or any activity that gets your skin wet for at least 12 hours following your spray tan session. Even a drop of water can leave a spot on your skin.
  • Wear loose clothing for the remainder of the day after getting your spray tan. If your clothing is tight, it can rub off the product and cause streaking.
  • After getting your spray tan, wait a while before you get dressed. You need to make sure that the product is completely dried so it does not wipe off and stain your clothing.

To maintain your spray tan:
  • Avoid exfoliating which will remove the skin cells that have darkened.
  • After showering, do not rub your skin to dry. Instead, pat dry using a soft absorbent towel.
  • Use a moisturizer after your bath or shower, and during the day to keep skin from flaking off.
