Thanks to that reality show family the braids we all remember from when we were kids are back in fashion.

Whether you like them tight and fierce like the K sisters or just a subtle fringe plait, there are millions of ways you can rock this trend this summer.

But with lots of complicated names and different styles, it’s easy to get confused about which one is which, so we’ve broken down the four main types you’ll have seen on your Instagram feed.

And don’t worry, we’ve got video tutorials too.

French braid

This is the traditional preppy style braid that we probably all wore once or twice as a kid.

Start at the top with three small equal pieces of hair.

Then, as with a normal plait, wrap the outside piece OVER the piece in the middle adding more hair as you make your way down.

You’ll see why wrapping OVER is so important in a second.

Dutch braid

The new it-braid, this is exactly the same technique as its French equivalent but you will be wrapping the hair UNDER the piece in the middle.

This will make it look like the braid is sitting on top of your hair rather than wrapped underneath like the French braid.

This braid has be seen on everyone from Kim K to Rita Ora to Jessica Alba.

Fishtail braid

This is level two stuff here as we’re upping the complication just a bit.

This braid involves only two pieces of hair. Don’t panic, we’ll talk you through this.

Splitting you hair in two, take a small strand of hair from the outside of one piece and cross it over to join the other piece.

It sounds complicated but take a piece from closest to your ear and pull it over to join the other piece at the other side then repeat the other way.

It takes a while for this one to come together so stick with it and you’ll see results eventually.
