The murder of James Bulger horrified the nation back in 1993. 25 years on from his harrowing death, his mum has opened up about the one regret she has.

In an interview with Mail Online, Denise Fergus bravely spoke about the tragic loss of her two-year-old son, who was abducted and then killed by Jon Venables and Robert Thompson in Liverpool in 1993.

She shared that she still feels guilty about her son James’ death, “People often ask me if I blame myself for what happened that day - for taking my eyes off him for that split second; for letting go of his hand as I looked for my purse; for not seeing what the CCTV footage later showed: Jon Venables and Robert Thompson beckoning James away from my side and out of the shop at 3.39pm.”

The mum shared her deepest regret as she spoke about that heart-breaking day. She admitted that if she had turned right instead of left, she could have saved her son’s life. Denise believes that if she had turned right when leaving the butchers, she would have spotted her son when he was abducted.

“I would have seen James being led away, just four short minutes after he had left my side, trustingly holding hands with the boys who were about to murder him", she shared.

Denise revealed, “There aren't the words to describe how I still feel now, every day. I was the one who let go of his hand; I was the one there meant to protect him."

25 years on from her son’s murder, Denise stated that she never stops thinking about her son, and that dreaded day. The mum said February 12, 1993, is one day that will “be etched on my mind until my dying day.”

Jon Venables and Robert Thompson served eight years in prison before their release in 2001. The pair were ten-years-old at the time of James’ murder, which made them the youngest people to be imprisoned for murder in England.
