Childbirth tends to be one of the more memorable moments in a woman’s life, which is why Alice Payne’s experience has really broken the mould.

The British mum has spoken of how she fell asleep while delivering her son, and woke up find that he was practically outside of her body!

Alice Payne, 23, shared her story with the Mail Online, recalling the birth of son Philip on December 18 last.

Alice was brought into hospital and induced, after doctors discovered that Philip had stopped growing inside the womb at 38 weeks.

The mum-to-be was hooked up to a contraction monitor and given hormones every 30 minutes to bring forward her labour.

However, a malfunction with the monitor threw a spanner in the works.

“Because the contraction monitor wasn’t reading me properly, doctors didn’t realise that I was as far along as I actually was,” explained Alice.

“So I was given some drugs to let me nap for a couple of hours, but 30 minutes later they realised I was ready to push.”

On top of the hormones, Alice was also given pain relief, and she fell asleep.

When the baby’s heart rate dropped, doctors decided it was time to bring Alice in for a C-section. However, amazingly – and while still asleep – Alice’s body responded to her husband John’s urgings for her to push.

Incredibly, Alice delivered her son – who tipped the scales at 6lbs 4oz – naturally, while napping.

Sharing her thoughts on the experience, Alice said: “Though I’m pleased I missed the pain of labour, I do wish I had been more present for my first baby’s birth…Now when he’s older and asks me, I’ll have to tell him I nodded off.”
