Áine McKenna is a ceramic designer and artist, she creates giftware items made from porcelain paper clay with the intention that the pieces look like paper. Her unique product ranges include porcelain paper bags (a little bag of love) and porcelain envelopes (love letters), before the envelope is sealed and fired a love note is placed inside, so the words burn away in the kiln. Burning has long been a ritual for release and renewal. Love letters is a burning ritual for cleansing and letting go of the old and welcoming the new.
Áine McKenna is currently the artist in residence at DAC on the Making It 13 programme, with Craft Northern Ireland.
Making It is a 2-year business incubation programme, which places practitioners working in craft and applied arts into host organisations throughout Northern Ireland. Makers on the programme have the opportunity to develop and expand their practice to establish a sustainable and dynamic craft business.
Following a degree in Fine and Applied art from University if Ulster Áine went on to do a Masters in Ceramic Design at Staffordshire University in the heart of the potteries, Stoke on Trent and later worked for Royal Stafford/Poole pottery specialising in surface pattern design.
Áine also makes a range of illustrated ceramics called Sketchbook. Vessels which look like a page from a sketchbook have hand drawn imagery applied to the ceramic body. All works are translucent and have a certain delicacy. They are both feminine and romantic with a contemporary flare and have love and affection built right into them.
