We have heard our fair share of unique birth stories here at MummyPages HQ, but the following is without doubt one of the most dramatic we have ever reported on.

A County Louth mum is recuperating this week after giving birth to her son in the back of her car, as Storm Frank raged around her.

According to the Irish Times, 26-year-old Elaine Taffe wasn’t due to welcome her little one until January 7. When she began experiencing labour pains on December 30 however, her father Harry high-tailed it towards Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

Mr Taffe told the newspaper that he parked his car in the car park and ran straight into the hospital to get help, as his grandson’s head had already made its appearance.

Recalling the dramatic event, he added: “Elaine was giving birth in the car with the two doors wide open and the wind howling, and the rain lashing around us.”

With the help of hospital staff, baby Kai was welcomed into the world at 6.55am.

Now that is some story to tell the little one when he’s old enough. Congratulations to the family on their new arrival, and well done to all involved.
