While some of us take to motherhood like a duck to water, there are plenty who struggle to settle into their new role for months.

But before you stress about how quick or how long it takes you to get the hang of this whole parenting thing, new research has found that on average it takes a good 14 months – with many “not in the slightest bit prepared” for their little one's arrival.

According to new research, it takes over a year to get used to your new role, with almost half of participants feeling shocked as they try to adjust to their new lifestyle.

The study conducted by Little Tikes, also revealed that the hardest part of parenting is the constant tidying up, closely followed by bedtime issues – including sleepless nights. But, sure, we didn’t need a survey to tell us that!

And while we are all meant to be in it together, 66 percent of participants get annoyed with others who portray the perfect idea of a family.

But it’s not all bad; just under half of parents said that seeing their child smile is the most rewarding, followed closely by watching them learn something new and sharing cuddles.

“It’s wonderful to see that despite all the sleepless nights and tidying up, many find magic in the little moments, cherishing the milestones as baby develops,” Child Psychologist Emma Kenny said.
