A father is crediting fate with leading him to a newborn baby who had been left alone in an open field in Chicago, just hours after birth.

James Turner was running to catch a bus when he passed the field and made the shock discovery, on Tuesday morning.

There, he found a newborn baby girl lying alone, her umbilical cord still attached to her body.

According to local media reports, Mr Turner called the police immediately, and emergency services arrived at the scene shortly after.

The tot, a baby girl, was rushed to hospital for examination and treatment. Medics believe she had been lying in the field for two to three hours.

The baby girl is said to be in a ‘serious but stable condition’.

In an interview with local media outlet Chicago 5, Mr Turner said: “It was, like, destined for me to walk through that field – like God pointed me in that direction. I’m positive that’s what happened.”

The Chicago Heights Police Department went on to issue a statement, expressing concern for the baby’s mother and appealing for her to come forward.

We’re thinking of both the baby and her mother at this time.

SHARE to gather well wishes for them.
