Its the 11th World Prematurity Day today!

Today is World Prematurity Day and the Irish Neonatal Health Alliance highlights ‘Milestone Card’ initiative to support families of over 4,500 premature babies born in Ireland each year

The Irish Neonatal Health Alliance (INHA) highlights the charities ‘Milestone Card’ initiative on this 11th global World Prematurity Day, which aims to raise awareness of the challenges these babies and their families face.

The specially designed cards sponsored by WaterWipes allow parents to chart their baby’s progress celebrating each precious milestone. Each small milestone reached is not only significant in their development but is also a huge boost for parents providing them with something positive to focus on. Almost 4,500 babies are born prematurely in Ireland every year and approximately 15 million babies are born preterm globally, accounting for about one in 10 of all babies born worldwide.

These cards are available complimentary to parents in Neonatal Intensive Care Units across the country or at

Mandy Daly, Irish Neonatal Health Alliance, (INHA) Health Director of Advocacy & Policy Making, said “The INHA’s vision is to support families affected by prematurity by advocating for increased awareness, empowering families and improving long term care for both the premature baby and family. The charity was established and has grown out of the experiences of such parents and their desire to provide more support to other parents taking the same journey. Many parents of premature babies have remarked that it is often the simplest things that give the greatest joy and it is through WaterWipes’ support and understanding we were able to create these special and empowering ‘Milestone Cards”

Commenting further on the initiative, Ailbhe O’Briain, WaterWipes, said, “As an Irish company it is with great pride that we support a charity such as the INHA. World Prematurity Day marks a very important moment to recognise the rollercoaster of emotions that all parents experience while their precious little ones are being care for in Neonatal Intensive Care Units across Ireland and indeed the world. As the world’s purest baby wipes, we understand just how special and delicate all babies are so it was a real pleasure to partner with INHA to create these Milestone Cards. The feedback from parents has been really wonderful with many parents displaying the cards with pride while babies are being cared for in hospital and then keeping them as a precious lifelong memento”.
