Kellogg's strives to make food people love. And today, that means more than food that tastes great. People care about where their food comes from, the people who grow it and make it, and that there's enough for everyone.
Kellogg's gives their foods the best start possible by protecting the land where their ingredients are grown and the foods are made. They work with farmers and the multitude of people that work hard to bring their cereal from the field to our morning breakfast table.
That’s why the company announced its 2020 Sustainability Commitments, with the aim to support the livelihoods of the farmers who grow their cereals, as well as the natural environments where the ingredients are grown and their foods are made.
“With the world’s population set to increase to nine billion by 2050, and precious resources in greater and greater demand, we’re working hard to reduce, reuse and recycle wherever we can, so we can continue making breakfast for millions of people for many years to come,” says Kellogg’s.
And here's how they're planning to do just that:
Responsible sourcing
Here Kellogg’s has committed to support the environment and the livelihoods of farmers and communities that grow their ingredients.
Responsibly sourced ingredients / materials
Kellogg’s aims to responsibly source their 10 priority ingredients by 2020, including corn, wheat and rice.
Sustainable agriculture
The company partners with Kellogg's Origins Programme™ millers and farmers across Europe to help implement sustainable practices of farming as part of the Programme.
Smallholder farmers
Kellogg’s has made the commitment to improve the livelihoods of 15,000 smallholder farmers in the regions they source from by 2020.
Women farmers / workers
Women farmers and workers in their value chain are a crucial part of the Kellogg’s process, so the company is actively supporting them by developing programmes to improve their livelihoods, their families and communities.
Conserving natural resources
Here Kellogg’s aims to conserve natural resources where their raw materials are grown and their foods are made.
Energy
Kellogg’s is working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its production facilities. For example, by 2020, they hope to expand their low carbon energy use in plants by 50% and by 2050 to have cut GHG emissions in their own global operations by 65%.
Packaging
In 2012, 84 per cent of Kellogg’s cereal boxes globally were made from recycled fibre content, and the company is continually striving to create resource-efficient packaging.
Water
By 2020 Kellogg’s aims to implement water reuse projects in at least 25 per cent of their plants.
Waste
All of Kellogg’s-owned European manufacturing sites (except in Russia) send zero waste to landfill.
