About

County Sligo golf club is widely regarded as one of the great championship links courses and is located in the picturesque seaside village of Rosses Point. 8km from Sligo, and is known locally as "The Point". Originally founded in 1894 as a 9 Hole course it is now a modern 27 holes complex with spacious clubhouse and up to date facilities. The club is the home of the famous West of Ireland Open amateur championship played every Easter since 1923 and has hosted many other prestigious events including the Home Internationals, the Irish Close and the Irish Professional Matchplay championship. The original clubhouse was built at its current site in 1912 and was designed by George O'Connor, an eminent Dublin based architect. The modern clubhouse of today still retains the beautiful Tudor style facade that exudes an old world charm fronting on the practice putting green. The updated clubhouse was officially opened by the then Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, on the 29th. of April, 2005.The County Sligo Golf Club now has a lovely 9 hole course to augment its 18 Hole championship one and this is situated to the right of the 5th. and 6th. holes and is accessed by driving across a road traversing the first and third fairways. This Bomore course is a lovely challenge in itself while the championship course is one of the great golf challenges of Ireland and the level of difficulty of the course varies with the diverse weather conditions experienced in "The Point". The course was redesigned by the famous golf architect, Harry S. Colt, in 1927 and continuous improvements have been made over the years to make the County Sligo course, in the words of the great Peter Alliss, "a tremendous test for the highest quality player and great fun for the modest competitor, Rosses Point stands at the very top of the list of Irish courses".
