About
Moyry Castle was built in the 17th century to guard the ‘Gap of the North’ or Moyry Pass which was a strategic mountain pass. The castle was built to protect the route between Ulster and Leinster and was built by Lord Mountjoy. It is strategically located on a rocky hillock. This passage was ideal for armies to pass through as it is a very wide passage in an area that was surrounded by woodlands and bogs. The castle is very basic with no stairs and the living quarters had to be reached by ladder and was made up of a fireplace and windows.
