Scattery Island Cathedral and Monastery

Scattery Island Cathedral and Monastery was founded in the 6th century by St. Senan and legends say that he banished a sea serpent from the island and also forbade women from coming onto the island. St. Ciaran of Clonmacnoise was one of the monastery’s students. Throughout the 9th and 10th century the settlement was repeatedly raided by Vikings. There is also a round tower, four churches, a castle, a gun battery, a fort, a holy well and a lighthouse to be found on the Island.
