The Market Cross on High Street in Newtownards was built in 1636. It was 11 feet tall with a lower door and staircase that lead to the roof. It was destroyed in 1653 by the Commonwealth army but was replaced in 1666. The roof was most likely used as shelter for Newtownards night watchmen.
