This is the second ever Cistercian Abbey to be built in Ireland. It was a very important monastic site in Ireland. The abbey was closed in 1536 because of a ban on monasteries by Henry VII. It was then changed in to a manor house. This abbey was used for the filming of the Oscar wining movie Braveheart.
