Minister for Health, Leo Varadkar, is preparing to meet with families who lost infants while under the care of the Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise and says he is keen to hear the views of those affected.

The meetings, which are due to take place this afternoon, coincide with a meeting of the Oireachtas Health Committee and Hiqa who are coming together to discuss a damning report into maternity services in the Midlands hospital.

Commenting on the controversial report's content, Deputy Jerry Buttimer, Chair of the Committee, said: "Anybody who read the report could not but be appalled at what transpired."

Making reference to services provided by the maternity unit, Mr. Buttimer  said the committee intended to address 'the way in which patients and their families were treated. Not to mention safety and the risks for women and babies born there."

Both events are taking place in the wake of yet another tragic infant death in Cavan General Hospital yesterday, which has seen the death of four babies since 2012.
