Let it snow: Weather warnings in place as significant snowfall expected today

It looks like we're set to have a white winter after all.

Met Eireann have forecasted a sprinkling of snow and we are EXCITED.

A status yellow weather warning has been in place nationwide since 9pm last night, along with a snow-ice warning until 11am today.

This spells bad news for motorists as icy and slippery conditions are expected on untreated surfaces so drive carefully.

According to a Met Éireann forecaster, ''Scattered sleet and snow showers most frequent across Ulster and Connacht will occur but some showers penetrating into central and eastern areas at times with the odd flurry farther south.''

How much snow are we talking?

Between 1cm and 2cm are expected in some areas.

Met Eireann continued, ''The showers will be of rain, hail, sleet and snow and snow showers most frequent in parts of the west and north of the country. There will be top temperatures of just 3C to 6C, in moderate to fresh and gusty west to north-west winds but occasionally strong along coasts."

Certain areas are worse affected than other so make sure to drive with caution.

AA Roadwatch said, ''This morning, the worst affected areas appear to be Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal and also Kerry where Gardaí are warning of ice and slippery conditions in parts of the county this morning. Including around Listowel and on the Castleisland Rd via Lyracrumpane.''

Drivers should expect collisions during rush hour as well as delays.

What about the rest of the week?

Well, we're set for more frost and ice patches, with warmer temperatures from Thursday into Friday, before turning colder again.

Looks like it's ime to get the hats, scarves and gloves out.
