Lidl has also indicated that black plastic packaging will be phased out in its fresh fish products by February 2019, followed by fresh meat, poultry and cured meat ranges by August of next year.

The supermarket announced the measures as they identified black plastic packaging can't be recycled in Ireland, as sorting systems cannot pick up the carbon black pigment.

The environmentally-friendly plan will see the supermarket avoid 65 tonnes of black plastic waste every year.

Additionally, all of their Irish stores will see single-use plastic items such as straws and disposable plates, cups and cutlery taken off the shelves.

This includes items such as plastic-stemmed cotton buds, and all single-use plastics will be swapped for biodegradable alternatives.

Lidl Ireland and Northern Ireland managing director, JP Scally spoke about the new measures.

“These are significant steps.”

“Sustainability is core to our business and we are proud to continue leading the retail sector in implementing ambitious measures which will deliver real and lasting benefits for everyone,” he added.
