A transgender American man has given a candid interview about his experience of pregnancy and birth.

Trystan Reese appeared with his husband Biff Chaplow by video link on This Morning, to speak about his journey.

Trystan, who was born female, gave birth to son Leo three weeks ago, and described the birth as incredibly painful.

"It was more painful than I could have ever possibly imagined, and Biff can attest to that because he was there for it,” he said, during the interview.

Biff added: "It's not in my nature to be super-caring and supportive, but with this, I really was!"

The couple, who live in Portland Oregon, said they’ve been blessed with “the easiest baby in the world”.

"We have the easiest baby in the history of babies,” Trystan gushed. "He gives us very little hassle.”

The couple had attempted to have a child previously but thought they had “missed their chance” when Trystan suffered a miscarriage.

The arrival of little Leo has made both of them incredibly happy. They are already adoptive parents, having adopted Biff's niece and nephew in 2011.

Biff explained: “The moment he was born was just like a pure moment of bliss, like the happiest moment of my life. To see the very beginning of Leo, of his life, was just amazing.”

Trystan had been taking hormones for 10 years but stopped as soon as he became pregnant with Leo.

In a post on the couple’s website, Trystan addressed the queries of those who were curious about why he wanted to become pregnant as a transgender person.

He wrote: “Some people think trans people were born into the wrong bodies, and we really hate our bodies, and that’s why we need to transition.

"For me, just transitioning normally - taking testosterone so that I have a beard and my voice is deep as it’s ever going to get - and appear like a man… that’s enough for me.

"I never felt like I needed to change my body. And I for sure do not hate my body. I feel like my body is awesome, I feel like it’s a gift to have been born with the body that I did.

"So, if you can start to understand that, then it starts to make more sense that it would not seem totally bizarre for me to want to create and carry a baby.”
