A mother, who can’t be named for legal reasons, has been spared jail after abandoning her newborn baby in a park.
The woman was apparently ‘panic stricken’ after giving birth to the baby as she was afraid that having a third child would mean her other two children would be taken away. She was also a victim of mental and physical abuse at the hands of her partner.
Her lawyer stated: “The circumstances in relation to the birth of the baby is evidence of this defendant's sheer desperation at the position she found herself in."
She got a six month suspended sentence from the judge, who said that “When her partner left things clearly spiralled out of control. When she realised she was pregnant she feared her children would be removed. In panic and desperation she acted as she did.”
The baby, named Jade, was discovered by a man walking his dog. She is now living with foster parents.
