It’s the show that has had people glued to their TV screens in wonder and awe – and, occasionally, shock – but it seems that not every mum is a fan of One Born Every Minute.

Mum and maternity therapist Charlotte Kanyi has called for a ban on the Channel 4 show or, alternatively, for a more balanced insight into the labour and birthing process to be aired.

Kanyi, who works with mums-to-be, told local media that many of her clients have come to her expressing fear ahead of giving birth, having watched One Born Every Minute. Having had a positive birthing experience with her own two children, she now wants producers to take a fresh approach to the show in order to allay women’s fears.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail, Kanyi said: “This programme is one of the places many women go to for information. It gives the image of women lying down having things done to them and looking scared. Sometimes it can be entirely normal for a woman in labour to say ‘I can’t do this anymore’. But to see lots of women saying that over and over again, it’s very skewed.

It doesn’t look like Channel 4 bosses will be reviewing their process any time soon however, with a spokesman insisting that the show has always provided “a rounded insight into the reality of the day-to-day experiences of a maternity ward”.

“It is a fair and accurate portrayal of the inner workings of the hospital’s maternity ward, which shows a wide spectrum of different birthing stories,” they added.
