As outrageous as some of them are, all of the breastfeeding-shaming stories almost pale into insignificance in light of the following report.

According to the New York Post, a 39-year-old mother was mugged at knifepoint while breastfeeding her infant daughter in Manhattan last week.

Reports claim that 39-year-old Elena Sobina was nursing her six-month-old daughter Kelly off to sleep in Fort Tryon Park, when she felt someone standing behind her. When she turned her head, Sobina was grabbed on the shoulder by a man.

The startled mother said that the next thing she knew, she was on the ground with her baby, who had awoken and begun to scream.

Recalling the moment for NYT, Sobina said: “I saw him from when I was on the ground and he had a knife in his right hand…He didn’t say anything so I wasn’t sure what he wanted. I thought he wanted to kill me and the baby. So I started to scream to him, ‘Please take my money and the bag.’”

The attacker, later identified as 31-year-old Juan Garcia, took the bag and ran away. After putting her daughter back into her buggy, Sobina shared her story with a passing stranger who called the police.

Interestingly, police were able to locate Garcia by tracking Sobina’s iPhone, and he was arrested shortly after. He has now been charged with robbery, criminal possession of stolen property, and acting in a manner injurious to a child.
