Mum begs for support after daughter spends over 100 days in Irish hospital

A mum, who has wished to remain anonymous, revealed that her 15-year-old daughter has spent the past 115 days in Wexford General Hospital.

She explained to the Enniscorthy Guardian that her young daughter suffers from behavioural and mental health issues.

The mum explained that they have not been able to leave the hospital due to a lack of funding.

They have been offered a bed in an appropriate unit many times but they haven’t been able to take the place because of the lack of funds.

The mum-of-three explained that she has no choice but to practically live in the hospital. She is residing in the room next to her daughter and struggles to see her other children on a daily basis.

“In the last two-and-a-half or three years, things have gotten much worse,” she said.

“She required 24-hour care before we came in [to Wexford General] and, after a while, they couldn’t control her in school. There were two SNAs appointed to her and she’d manage to run off and we’d have to get the gardaí out looking for her,” she told the Enniscorthy Guardian.

The mum said her daughter has numerous issues: “I could show you two foolscap pages of diagnoses that we’ve had over the year. They range from autism and behavioural issues to ADHD, ODD, PTSD, and even an intellectual disability.”

The staff at Wexford General Hospital are going above and beyond for the mum and her teenage daughter, but they urgently need to move to a residential care unit.

We do hope the family receive the funds and support they need for their daughter.
