A pregnant mum who smoked over 25 cigarettes a day while pregnant says she believes her nicotine addiction cost her son his life.

Sophie Jones, a mother-of-five, says she is tormented with guilt over the death of her stillborn son, Korey, in 2011.

Speaking to the Mail Online, Sophie, who lost another son named Frankie at just four days old, insists she was unaware of the dangers of smoking while pregnant.

“Losing my baby boy Korey as a stillbirth is one of my biggest regrets and continues to haunt me to this day. I never fully understood the risks of smoking while pregnant. I just thought it led to a smaller baby,” she said.

Despite her comments, the 31-year-old smoked for all of her pregnancies, except her current one.

“I’ve always dreamed of a big family, so when I fell pregnant this time I was determined to quit for good,“ she said.

Astonishingly, Sophie says she only became aware of the extent of harm that smoking while pregnant can do to a baby when she visited a dedicated service.

“When they sat me down to explain how smoking could be depriving my unborn baby of oxygen I felt sick,” she said.

Every cigarette contains over 4,000 chemicals which can restrict the supply of oxygen to a baby, putting their hearts under increased pressure.
