32-year-old Reanne Pederson from North Dakota is facing homicide charges after her four-day-old baby died when she breastfed shortly after taking the powerful painkiller hydrocodone.
Reanne, who admits taking drugs all through her pregnancy, is accused of snorting the drug shortly before breastfeeding her son Avery.
She fell asleep, and when she woke up the baby was unresponsive. Avery died the next day in the same hospital he had been born at less than a week earlier.
Reanne is facing up to five years in prison for negligent homicide.
Avery’s devastated grandmother, Lisa Miller, says that five years is nowhere near punishment enough.
“If he was here with us, he could live to be 80, 85. What's five years? That's not justice,” Lisa said.
“"Five years is not near enough time for taking a life and that's exactly what she did. She took a life. She took my grandson's life.”
