All pregnant mums and new mums have lots of plans and dreams for their little one.

Sara Gardner was very excited to be having her first child and had a hunch her baby would be a little girl.

She wrote a long wishlist of all the things she hoped her daughter would achieve in the future, such as having her own place and travelling the world.

But she was forced to revise the list completely when new baby Clara became ill and failed to thrive, according to The Mirror.

Clara spent some time in hospital and was fitted with a feeding peg, to help her gain weight.

While in hospital, a nurse told Sara the little girl reminded her of a child who had an extremely rare disorder, Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome.

A consultant confirmed the bad news that Clara had the extremely rare disorder; in fact, she is only one of 30 people in the UK with the condition.

Sara was told Clara would have severe learning difficulties and would not learn to walk, talk or express herself.

However, Clara defied the odds by being able to smile and giggle at eight months old.

Sara decided to rewrite the original wishlist with new goals for her daughter, such as being able to say "mum" and hold toys in her hand.

To her delight, Clara has already reached some of the milestones, such as being able to tickle her toes and say "mum."

Sara explains: “Writing it down helped me see things in a more positive way, and I wanted to dedicate myself to helping Clara meet all these goals."

“They might seem little things to others, but actually they were far more important than the things I had written in my first list."

Sara and her partner are currently raising funds to bring Clara to the US for special medical trials, and to find out more about her condition.
