Today the Government will pass a new  Family Leave Bill to allow fathers take up to two weeks paid paternity leave.

Similar to maternity benefit and based on the same PRSI contribution, those who avail of the leave will receive €230.00 for each week they are off work

However, new fathers will be able to take the leave within 26 weeks of the birth and aren't obliged to use it straight away.

Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald with the support of Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton will today bring a memo to Cabinet to confirm commitments made in Budget 2016.

The law will come into play from September of this year.
