Fresh hope has been sparked for the parents of Charlie Gard, after public statements of support from The Pope and President Trump.

Connie Yates and Chris Gard, who are campaigning for permission to bring Charlie to the US for experimental treatment, have been buoyed by the support.

“Our voices are finally being heard,” read a post on Charlie’s official Instagram account, next to screenshot of Trump’s tweet vowing to ‘help’ out the tot.

“Thanks, Donald Trump, for your support – Theresa May, do the right thing and save Charlie Gard.”

Trump’s comments came just a day after Pope Francis released a statement, admitting that he has been following Charlie’s case ‘with affection and sadness’.

“For this, he prays that their wish to accompany and treat their child until the end isn’t neglected,” a Vatican representative said.

While Charlie’s life-support was supposed to have been switched off last Friday, medics at Great Ormond Street Hospital agreed to extend the tot’s treatment. This decision was made after Connie and Chris released a heartfelt video, claiming that certain loved ones would not be able to make it, to say goodbye.

They also claimed that, while they had previously been given the option to bring Charlie home to die, they were now being denied that right.

Amid the uncertainty surrounding Charlie’s case, Connie and Chris have taken the opportunity to mark a very special event in their son’s life today: his birthday.

Charlie – who was born with a rare genetic condition – turns 11 months old today, and his devoted parents took to social media to pay tribute to him.

“Happy 11-month birthday, Charlie. Independence Day in the USA – here’s hoping you and your parents win your right to freedom from Great Ormond Street Hospital,” read the post, accompanied by a photo of him with his mum.

Connie and Chris have been supported by the public at every step of their battle. Not only has the ‘Charlie’s Fight’ Instagram page amassed a staggering 100K followers, but kind members of the public have raised the £1.3 million needed to send Charlie to the US.

With so many updates to this story, and so many new voices added to the mix, we are hoping for some kind of happy outcome for the Gards.
