Damien Smith has been hailed the 'real star of the show' by a midwife after delivering his fourth child when his wife went into labour in a carpark.

Samantha Smith, who wasn't due for another four days, attended an appointment in East Marsh Children's Centre and discovered she was three centimetres dilated.

Making her way to hospital, the 27-year-old mum realised that her daughter was very eager to make her big entrance and was about to arrive sooner rather than later.

Opening up about the event, Samantha said: "The head was already out by the time we got to the Co-op down the road- so we turned around in the carpark but it was too late."

Springing into action, Damien delivered his fourth child in the back of the car and has been called 'amazing' by his overjoyed partner.

Recalling the moment he delivered his daughter Ebony-Mai, Damien said: "There was no one else there so I knew I had to do something. The rest was just instinct and my natural reactions."

Despite being hailed a 'star' by a midwife, Damien is keen to play down his role in the big event, saying: "There was no real drama to it though. I did have to pull the cord from around her legs and neck as she was starting to clench but apart from that everything went perfectly."

Praising Damien for his quick-thinking, midwife Hazel Martin from the East Marsh centre said: "He immediately did skin-to-skin, which helped regulate the heartbeat and temperature, as well as relaxing the baby- which is really important."

Congratulations to the lovely couple!
