However, researchers at Cleveland’s Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine and the University of Washington Northwest Center to Reduce Ola Health Disparities in Seattle, are hoping to change this and are trying to encourage parents to take their little ones to the dentist from an early age.

In fact, according to leader of the study and Professor of Community Dentistry at Case Western Reserve, Suchitra Nelson, looking after milk teeth is important as decay in baby teeth can actually infect permanent ones.

Family Intervention with Caregivers of Children with Dental Needs will be a two-and-a-half study and hopes to inspire parents and caregivers to keep kids’ teeth healthy and ultimately improve their  oral health.

Talking about the research, leader of the study, Professor of Community Dentistry at Case Western Reserve, Suchitra Nelson said: "We have an opportunity to change the public health standard of practice with this new referral letter and educational materials."
