A paediatrician, who treated a child born at South Tipperary General Hospital in 2012, has been found guilty of poor professional performance today.

Following a ruling by the Medical Council, Muhammad Ilyas Khan was this afternoon found guilty of six out of the seven counts against him.

It is understood that the child at the centre of the case, who suffers from cerebal palsy, was not sent for head cooling treatment following his birth three years ago.

According to records, the consultant paediatrician's counts include a failure to implement an adequate treatment plan for the newborn's Hypoxia and a failure to arrange for the infant's transfer to a neo-natal intensive care unit.

Further to this, it has been established that the child's parents were misinformed of their son's progress by Dr. Khan who reportedly asserted that their infant was 'fine' despite knowing otherwise.

Commenting on their child's case, his parents announced they were pleased with the outcome, but the results would fail to impact their lives as their son requires ongoing treatment for a range of disabilities.
